LANTERN WORKSHOPS

2–24 February

MAKE YOUR OWN LANTERN

Working with Lantern Company artists, participants can explore project themes of ‘A place to call home’ and make their own 3-D lanterns which will become a central part of the City of Light installation. The largest buildings in the floating city have all been handmade by the Lantern Company’s international team of artists, but – like any city – its character will come from the diverse perspectives that shape it from across community.

By taking part in one of our community lantern-making workshops you can build your own hut, tent, house, block of flats or even palace lantern if you want! Once complete, you’ll see your own artwork become part of the huge-scale free public lantern festival – City of Light, City of Sanctuary in Liverpool’s Sefton Park.

Your lantern can be as simple or complicated as you wish and the process can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities. Ranging from a quick two-hour workshop to ambitious all-day projects, there will be a lantern-making workshop to suit you, your friends and family. All generations and skill levels are welcome.

Book your workshop place

Our artists and volunteers will be on hand to guide and advise you on how to create your lantern, but you must book your place in advance.

Workshops cost £10 per lantern (plus booking fee). We recommend you allow around 2-3 hours for small scale lanterns, and 4 to 6 hours for larger/more detailed lanterns. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

After the workshop
After the workshop has finished we’ll put your lantern somewhere safe to dry and have its lights installed. It will then be taken to Sefton Park to take its place as part of the City of Light installation on the Boating Lake.

If you’d like to keep your lantern, you’ll be able to collect in the week after the event has taken place.

9–10 February

TAKE OUR LANTERN-MAKING MASTERCLASS

Design and build your own large-scale 12v illuminated lantern

Tutors: Ewan Hunter / Rob Hill

Dates: 9/10 Feb 2019 (sat & sun) 10am – 4.30pm

Cost: £160 (places are limited)

Location: Make, Liverpool

Email: sophie@lanterncompany.co.uk for more details.

Our 2-day Lantern Company Masterclass covers everything there is to know about large-scale lantern-making! The masterclasses are facilitated by internationally acclaimed designer/makers Ewan Hunter and lighting designer/artist Rob Hill, each with over 30 years professional experience, making this a rare and unique chance to access top quality training with the Lantern Company.

On the day you will be guided through the thought processes involved in large-scale design principles, including logical and lateral thinking to address specific challenges, as well as simple

3-D technical scale drawings. Building on your practical making and problem-solving skills, you will be led through all the steps needed for designing and making large-scale sculptural lantern structures. You’ll learn how to add simple mechanisms and kinetic elements, as well as expanding your understanding of the many types of materials used to build strong and safe structures.

As you go you’ll also explore different 12v lighting options, with practical explanations of:

  • Mains and low voltage lighting
  • Using inverters
  • Different types of 12-volt lighting options and technologies available on the market
  • Making up lighting looms
  • Working out energy requirements (ampage, voltage, wattage, batteries)
  • Health and safety considerations

Together with the other participants you will put these new skills to use creating and lighting your own large-scale lantern. This masterclass runs alongside our current event, City of Light, and the team will be on hand to answer any questions you have about the live project.
